Origin and Description:
The long-leaved form of Hoya merrillii is a striking variant of the species, showcasing elongated, glossy leaves that can reach impressive lengths compared to the typical heart-shaped foliage. This variant still shares its origin with the standard Hoya merrillii, having been discovered on the island of Mindoro in the Philippines by botanist Elmer Drew Merrill in 1904. The long leaves are thick and dark green, with prominent veining that becomes even more pronounced under bright light. When exposed to direct light, the leaves may develop a reddish hue, adding another layer of beauty. Like other Hoya merrillii forms, this variant also produces fragrant, star-shaped flowers in creamy yellow, often blooming in clusters.

Natural Habitat:
Similar to the standard form, the long-leaved Hoya merrillii originates from the humid, tropical forests of Mindoro Island, where it grows as an epiphyte on trees. The plant thrives in areas with indirect light and consistent moisture from the surrounding environment, making it ideal for tropical and warm climates.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to enhance its growth and the red hues on its leaves. Direct sunlight can help intensify the leaf coloration but should be avoided for extended periods to prevent scorching.
  • Watering: Allow the soil to dry between waterings, especially during cooler months. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
  • Humidity: High humidity, around 60-80%, is ideal for keeping the plant healthy and promoting vigorous growth.
  • Temperature: This form of Hoya merrillii prefers temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C) and should be protected from temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
  • Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix like orchid bark, perlite, and coco husk to support its epiphytic growth habits.

Fun Fact:
The long-leaved Hoya merrillii is highly sought after for its distinctive, elongated foliage, making it a favorite among collectors. The plant's dynamic leaves and its ability to develop red hues under the right light conditions add to its visual interest, making it a statement piece in any Hoya collection.

Care Needs

Bright diffused light

Recreate conditions under a tree canopy, where plants receive lots of light, but it is filtered through the foliage of the trees above. Your light should be bright enough to cast soft shadows.

Low Humidity: Ideally Above 40%

This Hoya tolerates a drier environment. However, it could still benefit from light humidity care, including misting and grouping together with other houseplants. May require humidifier in cooler, drier months.

Cold Tolerant: Lowest 50F/10C

This hoya will tolerate cooler conditions than most.

Does Sunstress

This plant has evolved to shift color when exposed to bright sunlight, much like a human getting a tan. This does not harm the plant with proper care.
